So sad, the Uptown Theater is now closed. Today was the last day that they were open and I'm glad I got to see one last movie there. That's right, I finally watched The Social Network.
I have a lot of fond memories of the Uptown -- the first time I ever met the founder of IMDb was at a showing of Good Night, and Good Luck. I also once tried to go see The Fall with Lynn and her brother, walked all the way down the hill to get to the theater only to find out that the projector was malfunctioning. (I did finally end up watching it like 3 months later -- beautiful movie.) Other great films seen at the Uptown: The Hedgehog, Blade Runner (the final cut), Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring.
I understand why it's closing (not that it makes it any easier) -- old theater, can't be updated with new technology without a lot of money, etc -- but I will be sad to see it go. There were a few people taking pictures of the Uptown tonight, the most memorable of which was an old man who had a sign that said "Goodbye Uptown, 84 years." (The theater has been there since 1926.)
Even if I didn't frequent it that often, it was always nice to have a little movie theater in Queen Anne, even if the seats weren't as nice or the sound wasn't top quality. I hope someone is able to buy it and keep showing movies there; it'll be a shame to see it sit vacant.
